strokes Development

The aim of this clinic is to increase proficiency by refining the strokes introduced previously, while adding new strokes and techniques, deepening the connection between the paddler’s body, boat and blade.

Pre-requisites: Basic Skills course, Stroke Fundamentals or equivalent


Skills taught:
  • forward and reverse paddling
  • forward and reverse sweep strokes
  • draw and sculling draw
  • stern rudder strokes
  • hanging draw
  • linking strokes
  • injury prevention

Intermediate Rescues

This clinic expands on the skills learned in at the Basic level. The assisted re-entries seen in the previous level are refined for speed and efficiency, and other forms of assisted re-entries are introduced. This lesson also covers self re-entry techniques and cold injuries. 

Pre-requisites: Basic Skills Course, Rescue Fundamentals Clinic or equivalent

Balance and maneuvering

This clinic helps paddlers push the limits of balance, increasing boat control and maneuverability. Bracing, as a means of capsize prevention, is also covered in this clinic.

Pre-requisite: comfortable preforming wet exits and self re-entries in deep water

introduction to Navigation

In this on-land clinic, we delve into charts, marine navigation and weather fundamentals, float plans, communication and emergency preparedness. With a focus on planning and preparing a day trip, this clinic will provide paddlers with essential theory and knowledge that can help decrease the likelihood of a pleasant outing from turning into a tale of caution.
